08 May 2015

As official sponsor of the Green Flag Award, DS Smith sites up and down the country are actively engaging with their staff and communities following their pledge to support green spaces across England.

As official sponsor of the Green Flag Award, DS Smith sites up and down the country are actively engaging with their staff and communities following their pledge to support green spaces across England.

Each of DS Smith's 52 UK sites are displaying DS Smith and Keep Britain Tidy partnership posters, featuring photos taken during a recent volunteering day. These posters keep the partnership at the forefront of everyone's minds whilst publicising it to site visitors; visualising DS Smith's commitments as a socially responsible company.

Here's a taste of some of the exciting projects taking place under the DS Smith partnership…

DS Smith Plc, London is working with the local Phoenix Gardens and is in the process of organising a fundraiser to help support a project the gardens are struggling to finance.

Bolton (Recycling) Depot has developed a good working relationship with a local community group 'Friends of Longsight Park'. They have already completed one volunteering afternoon, during which volunteers transformed an overgrown and treacherous footpath, making it accessible and safe for the public. The volunteers also replenished a big flower bed, which is now in full bloom. Bolton have their second volunteering afternoon this month, when they will be repainting five metal benches and tables for park visitors to enjoy.

Plymouth (Packaging) site are working to improve an onsite allotment. They have an assigned team who are responsible for maintaining the plot. This is a great example of team work and a project that benefits the DS Smith employee community at a local level.

Blunham (Packaging) site will be working with the RSPB to develop and maintain an onsite lake. This ties in nicely with the site's existing 'Healthy Hearts' campaign and looks to be an exciting project for all involved.

Kettering (Packaging) site has begun engaging with their local community, taking part in a recent litter pick with Barton Seagrave Parish Council.

Outside the English border, other sites are also keen to get involved. Packaging's Crumlin and Neath sites are holding a 'Think Green' competition, which is encouraging employees to suggest green ideas that will benefit the site, community or the environment. The winner of the best idea will receive a signed Cardiff Blues rugby jersey.Crumlin have also started to create a footpath from scratch at their site, which is taking shape nicely.

DS Smith are putting forward volunteers from four neighbouring  sites to be involved in Keep Wales Tidy's 'Lamby Way Clean Up' on 14 May, as part of Clean Coast Week.   Their combined involvement will highlight DS Smith's united dedication to improving green spaces.
