Figgate Park

Edinburgh values its reputation as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, renowned for its setting, history and built heritage. Parks and greenspaces are integral to this. They serve as a stage for our public lives and are settings where celebrations are held, where social exchanges take place, where friends mix, where cultures run into each other, where nature thrives, and where people revive themselves from the stresses of urban living.

Figgate Park is a popular and established community park in the Edinburgh’s East Neighbourhood. Originally acquired by the The City of Edinburgh Council in 1933 the park has benefitted from recent investment works to make the park a welcoming and safe place for visitors. The recently established Friend of Figgate Park Group has worked in partnership with the Council to enhance the park’s features and to allow visitors to get closer to the rich biodiversity the park offers. In 2011 an attractive veiwing platform feature was installed at the park's pond to provide users to get closer to the water and pondlife as well as providing an education and recreational area for local school children. This particular project demonstrated the successful partnership working in place within the park and the collective enthusiasm to sustain and improve the quality of this important green space.

Community and local schools involvement in the park ranges from local volunteers organising task days to local schools using the park and pond area as an outdoor classroom and recreational area. Collectively, the park’s stakeholders have worked hard to ensure that Figgate Park is clean, safe, colourful and diverse, and to ensure that the park continues to be valued locally.

The recenty updated management plan provides an excellent platform to direct the future management, maintenance and development to ensure that this community park continues to improve in quality.
