Parque la Mexicana, Santa Fe - Mexico City becomes second park to achieve Green Flag Award in Mexico

16 July 2019

Parque la Mexicana in Mexico City has become only the second park in Mexico to achieve the Green Flag Award after the scheme was launched in the country a matter of weeks ago at Congresso Parques in Monterrey.

The park met the internationally recognised standard, after being judged by Chris Worman MBE, a highly experienced park manager and volunteer judge from the UK.

Parque la Mexicana is a fairly new park, established in November 2017 in Santa Fe and originally conceived as a proposal by local residents and now covers 20 hectares of valuable green space to the West of Mexico City.

The park welcomes a wide range of users - from children and families, to dog walkers and those just seeking peace and quiet contemplation. Features include a skatepark, lakes, ampitheater and restaurant complex. Green areas show impressive statistics - 100,000 square metres of grass, 1 million plants and 5 thousand trees!

However work on this fantastic multi-functional destination park is not yet complete. Ambitious plans are underway to develop a new formal garden, centre for culture and a range of sports facilities to enhance the offer to local residents and those visiting from Mexico City.

Itziar de Luisa, Executive President of Asociación de Colonos - the managing organisation said:

"We are really pleased to achieve the Green Flag Award for Parque La Mexiana, and especially as one fo the first in Mexico to meet the international standards. It gives us pride in our work that we deliver with such effort every day, to keep this park running for the community of Santa Fe."

Carl McClean, International Development Manager for the Green Flag Award said:

"Parque la Mexicana is a great example of a community driven project to provide green space for local residents. By achieving the Green Flag Award - one of the first in Mexico, it shows that the hard work and dedication of all those involved is recognised by the international standard. Well done!"

Keep Britain Tidy, who manage the Green Flag Award scheme under licence from the UK Ministry of Housing Communities and Local Government have established a partnership agreement with La Asociación Nacional de Parques y Recreación de México (ANPR Mexico) to launch the Award in Mexico.

After a pilot test launch in conjunction with Keep Britain Tidy, Asociación Nacional de Parques y Recreación de México will begin accepting applications from around Mexico later in 2019 for full delivery of the 2019-20 award season.

Luis Romahn from ANPR Mexico said:

“The Green Flag Award is developing a strong global reputation in supporting the improvement of parks and green spaces. As the leading organisation representing the sector in Mexico, we are excited to be partnering with Keep Britain Tidy to launch the Green Flag Award and help promote the wide ranging benefits of the scheme for our people and their communities”

Carl McClean, International Development Manager for the Green Flag Award said:

“Keep Britain Tidy are really excited about our new partnership with La Asociación Nacional de Parques y Recreación de México, who are passionately committed to managing the Green Flag Award in Mexico. ANPR Mexico are leading the way as the first country in the Americas to introduce the Award and I'm really looking forward to seeing more parks and green spaces getting involved in the Green Flag Award, now it has arrived in this part of the world”
