Ultuna Campus of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences is the first green space in Sweden to achieve the coveted Green Flag Award.
Green Flags have been flying over the best of the UK’s parks and green spaces for 21 years. In recent years they have been joined by sites in Australia, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, Spain and the United Arab Emirates and for the first time this year Sweden.
Ultuna Campus in Uppsala is over 70 hectares in size and in recent years has been trialling alternative lawns to create biodiverse, aesthetically pleasing, and cost-effective plant communities based on the diverse native Swedish flora.
Professor Maria Ignatieva, said “We are delighted to have achieved the International Green Flag Award. Our team had a very positive experience of working with the management plan and try to make SLU Campus in Ultuna more sustainable and attractive. This recognition of our efforts gives us strength to go ahead and create a truly exceptional educational and research outdoor environment.”
